Population status assessment of the globally threatened crayfish
Astacus astacus and Austropotamobius torrentium in the lakes of Prespa,
Ohrid and rivers of the Shebenik – Jabllanice National Park, Albania

 Main Goal:  The project aims to monitor the populations of tëo globally threatened crayfish species, Astacus astacus and Austropotamobius torrentium, in the lakes of Prespa, Ohrid, as well as the tributaries of Shkumbini River floëing from Shebenik-Jabllanice National Park.

Key objectives:

  1. Ensuring data on the presence of the targeted crayfish species in the three KBAs and making it available to the broader scientific community.
  2. Increasing the capacities of the personnel at the National Agency of Protected Areas of Albania to conduct monitoring of the population of the targeted crayfish species.
  3. Initiating the process of securing legal protection status in Albania for the targeted crayfish species (including species listed in the Red List of Flora and Fauna of Albania).
  4. Raising awareness among the general public about the importance of conserving the targeted crayfish species.
