Main Goal: To mitigate the impact of the invasive blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) on the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population in the Karavasta Lagoon, through close collaboration with protected area managers and local fishermen, contributing to the conservation of native biodiversity and the sustainable management of the lagoon ecosystem.
Key objectives:
- Targeted control of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) will be carried out to increase the quantity captured, reducing competition and habitat disturbance affecting the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in the Karavasta Lagoon.
- Promotion and valorization of the blue crab as a commercial resource will be done by expanding its use in local markets and restaurants, creating incentives for sustainable harvesting.
- Awareness will be raised among fishermen, local communities, consumers, and stakeholders about the impacts of invasive species and the importance of conserving the European eel and lagoon ecosystems.
- Blue crab management measures will be integrated into the national European eel action plan to enhance coordinated management and ensure the long-term conservation of the species.
